A speech impairment is when an individual has trouble pronouncing words and sounds. There are many reasons why this may occur and for some who may stutter, additional stress and anxiety can cause them to have further difficulty.

A language disorder is when an individual has difficulty understanding the meaning of words, either written or, spoken and may not be able to talk or write themselves. Also, there can be an inability to put together words that are needed to be expressive, share ideas and not be able to understand others.

There may be a need for speech therapy input to understand the level of support required.

There may also be a need for training in varieties of communication interactions from British sign language, Makaton or communication aids including word books, images, signs, and symbols.

It can be frustrating for individuals with speech impairments when staff try to finish their words or guess what they are saying.
