If there is damage or a problem with one or more parts of the ear, a hearing impairment can occur.

For some, the individual may have trouble hearing or have no hearing at all. The individual may have problems understanding speech or be able to recognise or interpret sounds.

Supporting individuals with hearing impairments may require equipment such as hearing aids and when communicating, aids for reading and writing.

When communicating, the person may be lip reading so ensure you are in front and facing the person.

There is no reason to speak louder or shout at a hearing-impaired person and, to the opposite extreme, not speak to a person as they ‘can’t hear you’.
